Costa Rica national flag with horizontal stripes of blue, white, red, white, and blue; the version flown by the government incorporates the national coat of arms. Its width-to-length ratio is 3 to 5.

Story:
The national flag is rectangular and the ratio of length to width is 5:3. From top to bottom, the flag is composed of five broad stripes, blue, white, red, white and blue. The red strip is twice as wide as blue and white, and the national emblem is painted on the left. Blue and white came from the former Central American federal flag, and the red part was added when Costa Rica established the Republic in 1848.
