Hydro has decided to increase the company's aluminum recycling capacity at its Sjunnen extrusion plant in Sweden by 50 percent within one year. The project involves an investment of 11.3 million euros and the expansion will be completed by the end of 2022.
With the expansion of the aluminum melting and casting facility, Sjunnen's aluminum recycling capacity will increase from 42,000 to 62,000 tons per year. Hydro says the decision to expand the aluminum foundry capacity in Sjunnen is in response to increased market demand for low-carbon aluminum profiles in all industries where the company's extrusion business is located.
In addition, the area located in southern Sweden is particularly well suited for obtaining usable aluminum scrap from local industries that would otherwise have to transport it over long distances, thereby increasing the cost and carbon footprint of the end product.
Jonas Bjuhr, Managing Director of Hydro Extrusions Sweden, says: "Using more process and end-of-life aluminum scrap from local industries, and with our extrusion plants in Vetlanda and Finsp?ng, we can supply more low-carbon aluminum to the region. Recycled aluminum facilities play an important role in the transition to a green economy."
Hydro has set an overall goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030, and increasing its aluminum recycling capacity and producing more low-carbon aluminum products plays an important role in achieving this goal. The expansion will enable the Sjunnen plant to increase production of Hydro's low-carbon aluminum products, including Hydro RESTORE and Hydro REDUXA.
In addition, Hydro Extrusion Sweden announced the restart of the Sjunnen extrusion plant to meet the growing demand for sustainable aluminum profiles.
