Perth, Australia-based mining company Canyon Resources recently announced the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement and memorandum of understanding with China's Metallurgical Changtian International Engineering Company Limited (MCC-CIE) to develop the Mini-Martap bauxite project in Cameroon, according to a foreign news release.
According to a filing with the Australian Securities Exchange, Changtian International Engineering will increase its participation in the bauxite project and provide Canyon Resources with the necessary support in the areas of financing, offtake, technical and commercial issues.
The new agreement comes after Canyon has been working with CMT Changtian International Engineering for some time. Canyon began working with CMT's division in 2020 on a feasibility study contract involving the operation of the Mini Martap phase.
Canyon managing director Phillip Gallagher said the new agreement was good news for the Cameroon project. "Canyon has been working with CMT Changtian International Engineering since late 2020 to develop a BFS for the Mini Martap project. signing this strategic partnership and MOU is a particularly positive step in the next phase of work. The signing of the MOU with Changtian International is a testament to the excellent relationship that Canyon and Changtian International have established in a relatively short period of time, with Changtian International introducing real options for project financing and offtake. Canyon benefits from working with such a strategic partner, as Changtian International has extensive experience in building and operating mining projects in Africa."
Phillip Gallagher further stated, "Changtian International is part of CMT, a subsidiary of Minmetals, and Minmetals and CMT have extensive experience in owning and operating different metal mines, alumina refineries and aluminum smelters. They understand the Mini Martap project very well as they have been involved in the BFS. excitingly, Changtian International has considerable technical and financial experience that could significantly increase Changtian International's opportunity to participate in the project, thus confirming Changtian International's recognition on the Mini-Martap project."
