Nolanda alumina refinery gradually resumes production after hurricane

Date:2021-09-04 View:429

The Noranda refinery in Gramercy, Louisiana, is scheduled to resume alumina production and bauxite refining operations within the week after "extensive investigations and inspections" following Hurricane Ida, according to S&P Global Platts.

About 80% of capacity is expected to be restored during the week, with full alumina capacity to be restored on the premise. The speed of recovery will depend on multiple factors such as the resumption of navigation on the lower Mississippi River and the resumption of operations by some of the major suppliers and service providers in the region.

It is reported that the hurricane did not cause serious damage to the alumina plant and no workers were injured at the site. As part of precautionary measures, the plant was shut down after Hurricane Ida, Platts Energy reported Aug. 31.

The plant has 1.2 million tons/year (smelter-grade and chemical-grade) of alumina production capacity, of which about 55% of capacity is smelter-grade alumina.
