Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, formerly known as the Indian oil and Gas Commission, was established in 1956 and changed its current name in 1993. In 1995, ONGC had 730 million tons of oil reserves, 658 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves, 31.65 million tons of oil production and 16.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas production. ONGC videsh Ltd is a subsidiary of ONGC videsh Ltd, which is responsible for foreign oil exploration and development activities. In 1995, the company made a number of major discoveries and drilled four independent oil layers in the Bombay offshore oil and gas area. After testing, the company obtained 798 tons of oil and 335000 cubic meters of natural gas per day. In 1996, two more natural gases were discovered in the Krishna Godavari basin, with a daily output of 116000 cubic meters of natural gas and 22.5 tons of condensate. The company's downstream business is limited to LPG production, with an annual output of 930000 tons.
In 2003, ONGC announced the launch of an information project called "ice" to fully implement SAP's ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system at a cost of US $19 million. The main goal of ice project is to standardize and optimize the business process of the whole enterprise through effective and integrated information. For example, ERP system can provide comprehensive and effective information on the basis of real-time. Data sources can be input at one time and shared globally, so as to reduce the duplication of labor between departments and businesses, and provide the accuracy and efficiency of information. In addition, ERP system is helpful for petroleum enterprises to strengthen cost management and operation control, improve decision-making quality and enterprise competitiveness.
ONGC is one of the leading enterprises in the upstream oil industry in Southeast Asia. ONGC project is SAP's largest ERP project in India and SAP's largest consulting project in Asia Pacific region. In India, SAP takes an absolute leading position in the field of management informatization in the downstream oil industry, and ONGC project further consolidates SAP's leading position in the upstream industry. SAP's long-term in-depth industry research and knowledge accumulation, as well as its integrity image of delivering these valuable management wealth to users, are the key to ONGC's decision to fully implement SAP's upstream solutions for oil and gas industry.
