Shanghai gas began in 1865. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Shanghai's urban gas industry has been continuously developing and growing, and in the 1990s, the urban gas industry was fully gasified. In 1999, the East China Sea natural gas entered Shanghai, opening a new era of great development of natural gas in Shanghai. With the west east gas transmission, imported LNG, Sichuan East Gas Transmission and other natural gas sources successively entering Shanghai, Shanghai is expected to realize all natural gas gasification of pipeline gas by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan.

Shanghai gas (Group) Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shenneng (Group) Co., Ltd., was established in December 2003 with a registered capital of 4.2 billion yuan. Its business scope covers investment, construction, operation and sales of natural gas pipeline network, production and sales of artificial gas, and operation of liquefied gas. Shanghai's local gas market share exceeds 90%, and its user scale and storage and transportation capacity are among the top in China. It includes one natural gas pipeline network company, three gas manufacturing companies, five gas sales companies, one liquefied gas company, and shares in Gas Design Institute, Shenneng new energy, Shenneng energy services, Linnei, Fuji engineering, etc.
