E. On is a joint-stock company headquartered in Dusseldorf. It is a leading European energy enterprise in the world. Its business is mainly natural gas and electric power in Europe.
The business scope of the enterprise includes: direct sales of electric power and natural gas to industrial and civil end users, and the other large part is sold through local suppliers. Part of the electricity is produced by E.ON's power plants or purchased from other sources. The sales situation of natural gas is similar to that of electric power, which directly covers the whole process from natural gas collection to transportation and agent to consumers.
The regional focus of the enterprise is the central European market, such as the eastern and western parts of the European center, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania. The above mentioned regions account for two-thirds of all electricity and natural gas markets. In addition, it also involves markets in other regions, such as the United Kingdom, the Midwest of the United States, the newly opened trans regional Pan European natural gas markets in Italy and Spain (as well as Russia and France), energy trading and environmental protection.
At a press conference on September 27, 1999, two traditional energy giants, VEBA and viag, announced their merger in 2000. One of their subsidiaries, E.ON Energy Inc., is based in Prussian power and Bavarian energy. In November 2001, E.ON submitted an application to the Federal Cartel Bureau for the merger and acquisition of Ruhr Natural Gas Co., Ltd. in Essen city. After the Federal Cartel agency vetoed the application, a ministerial approval was given. Until March 2003, E.ON started a legal dispute with its competitors to complete the acquisition. In the end, E.ON became the sole owner of Ruhr Natural Gas Co., Ltd., with 60% market share of German natural gas. On July 1, 2004, the name of Ruhr Natural Gas Co., Ltd. was changed to E.ON Ruhr Natural Gas Co., Ltd. and belongs to E.ON Konzern.
Since E.ON sold a large number of shares in other companies, such as viaginterkom (sold to BT; today's O2), one part of Austria's mobile operator, gelsenwasser AG, a cross regional water supplier, and viterra, a real estate company, it has focused on the power and natural gas industries. E. On has instead taken a stake in many of the privatized energy suppliers in Eastern Europe.
